Abstract

Essential oil from aerial parts of Swertia cordata (G. Don.) Clarke obtained by steam distillation was analysed through Gas chromatography and Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The main compounds found were palmitic acid (8.34), caryophyllene oxide (5.65), pentadecanal (4.77) and lachnophyllum ester (4.14%). Different concentrations of essential oil were tested for antimicrobial activity by disc diffusion method. The oil was found active against gram positive bacteria and fungi.
