Abstract

Bornafix® by IFF is a fragrance ingredient characterized by warm woody, dry amber, and cedarwood notes. It is used in woody compositions and provides good support for most floral accords. It is substantive and exhibits interesting synergistic properties. This study presents a method for synthesizing this product from iso-borneol and 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO), catalyzed by naphthalene-1,5-disulfonic acid in benzene. A high yield of 92% was achieved through distillation for product isolation. The results demonstrate an optimized process that enhances the fragrance profile by utilizing readily accessible catalysts while suppressing undesired over-etherification. Furthermore, the developed methodology shows exceptional scalability, establishing itself as a techno-economically viable strategy for industrial manufacturing.
