Progress in Target Drug Molecules for Alzheimer's Disease
Authors: Jiayang Xie, Ruirui Liang, Yajiang Wang, Junyi Huang, Xin Cao and Bing NiuAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that 4 widespread in the elderly. The etiology of AD is complicated, and its pathogenesis is still unclear. Although there are many researches on anti-AD drugs, they are limited to reverse relief symptoms and cannot treat diseases. Therefore, the development of high-efficiency anti-AD drugs with no side effects has become an urgent need. Based on the published literature, this paper summarizes the main targets of AD and their drugs, and focuses on the research and development progress of these drugs in recent years.

Mechanisms and Characteristics of Sulfonylureas and Glinides
Authors: Wei Lv, Xianqing Wang, Qian Xu and Wencong LuBackground: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a complex progressive endocrine disease characterized by hyperglycemia and life-threatening complications. It is the most common disorder of pancreatic cell function that causes insulin deficiency. Sulfonylurea is a class of oral hypoglycemic drugs. Over the past half century, these drugs, together with the subsequent non-sulfonylureas (glinides), have been the main oral drugs for insulin secretion. Objective: Through in-depth study, the medical profession considers it as an important drug for improving blood sugar control. Methods: The mechanism, characteristics, efficacy and side effects of sulfonylureas and glinides were reviewed in detail. Results: Sulfonylureas and glinides not only stimulated the release of insulin from pancreatic cells, but also had many extrapanular hypoglycemic effect, such as reducing the clearance rate of insulin in liver, reducing the secretion of glucagon, and enhancing the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Sulfonylureas and glinides are effective first-line drugs for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Although they have the risk of hypoglycemia, weight gain and cardiovascular disease, their clinical practicability and safety can be guaranteed as long as they are reasonably used.

A Comprehensive Review of the Genus Pyrola Herbs in Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry and Pharmacological Activities

Pyrola herbs were used as medicinal plants for a long history with wide-ranging activities such as nourishing kidney-yang, strengthening muscles and bones, activating blood, stopping bleeding, dispelling rheumatism, and eliminating dampness. Currently, the research on Pyrola plants is increasing year by year but there is no comprehensive and detailed review concerning genus Pyrola. This review aims to sum up the updated and comprehensive information about botany and traditional use, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities and safety by analyzing the information available on Pyrola plants via internationally accepted scientific databases. Collectively, more than 100 compounds have been isolated from the Pyrola plants. Furthermore, a total of 33 prescriptions containing Pyrola plants are compiled in this review. Pyrola plants are used as indispensable agents in traditional Chinese medicine due to its activities of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, lipidlowering, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular protection, proliferation of osteoblasts promoting, antineoplastic and etc. Further work should be developed on the elucidation of structure-function relationship, understanding of multi-target pharmacological effects, as well as developing its application both in clinical usage and functional food for research and development of Pyrola plants.

Pumping O2 with no N2: An Overview of Hollow Fiber Membrane Oxygenators with Integrated Arterial Filters
Authors: Anxin Liu, Zhiquan Sun, Qier Liu, Ning Zhu and Shigang WangThe advancement of cardiac surgery benefits from the continual technological progress of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Every improvement in the CPB technology requires further clinical and laboratory tests to prove its safety and effectiveness before it can be widely used in clinical practice. In order to reduce the priming volume and eliminate a separate arterial filter in the CPB circuit, several manufacturers developed novel hollow-fiber membrane oxygenators with integrated arterial filters (IAF). Clinical and experimental studies demonstrated that an oxygenator with IAF could reduce total priming volume, blood donor exposure and gaseous microemboli delivery to the patient. It can be easily set up and managed, simplifying the CPB circuit without sacrificing safety. An oxygenator with IAF is expected to be more beneficial to the patients with low body weight and when using a minimized extracorporeal circulation system. The aim of this review manuscript was to discuss briefly the concept of integration, the current oxygenators with IAF, and the in-vitro / in-vivo performance of the oxygenators with IAF.
