Biofeedback is the process of learning to influence involuntary bodyprocesses in order to receive physiological data from an electronic device thatcontinuously monitors specific physiological parameters. It is a method of assessinghow people react to physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual stresses in their lives.Stressed-out bodies are more prone to physical discomfort and even illness. When thebody receives new information about its status, it responds by making healthyadjustments to reduce stress and tension. Biofeedback relies on electrical measurementstaken from the front of the body (frontal cortex). When this information is presented tothe patient, he attempts to consciously change their internal reactions in order to changethe electrical results. The chapter discusses biofeedback technology and its applicationsin psychology and other treatments.
