[6]-gingerol as a Cancer Chemopreventive Agent: A Review of Its Activity on Different Steps of the Metastatic Process
For many years, ginger or ginger root, the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale, has been consumed as a delicacy, medicine, or spice. Several studies have been conducted on the medicinal properties of ginger against various disorders, including cancer. Cancer is the second leading cause of death, and chemoprevention is defined as the use of natural or synthetic substances to prevent cancer initiation or progression. Evidence that ginger-derived compounds have inhibitory effects on various cancer cell types is increasingly being reported in the scientific literature. In this review we focused on the cancer chemopreventive effects of [6]-gingerol, the major pungent component of ginger, and its impact on different steps of the metastatic process.

Chemical Properties and Biological Activities of Cyclopentenediones: A Review
Authors: Zuzana Sevcikova, Milan Pour, David Novak, Jitka Ulrichova and Jan VacekCyclopentenediones (CPDs) are secondary metabolites of higher plants, fungi, algae, cyanobacteria and bacteria. A common denominator of CPDs is the cyclopent-4-ene-1,3-dione skeleton (1), which is modified by several functional groups. The heterogeneity of these substitutions is reflected in around one hundred CPDs reported to date. Most of the derivatives were isolated primarily from plant sources. Synthetic analogues were then prepared with new biological activities and more interesting pharmacological potential. Antifungal substances called coruscanones (2, 3) are the most studied of the CPDs. Other intensely investigated CPDs include lucidone (4), linderone (5), asterredione (6), involutone (7), nostotrebin 6 (8), TX-1123 (9), G2201-C (10), madindolines (11, 12) and many others. In addition to antibacterial and antifungal effects, a broad spectrum of biological activities for CPDs has been reported in the past two decades, especially anti-inflammatory, cytostatic and specific enzyme inhibitory activities. The CPD skeleton has been identified in a number of substances isolated from the plant kingdom; hence, CPDs can be referred to as a new group of natural bioactive substances. The main goal of this review is to define CPDs with respect to basic chemistry, isolation, synthetic approaches and description of their biological effects. Special attention is given to a detailed view into biological activities of CPDs in vitro and their phamacological potential.

Quinoline – a Promising Fragment in the Search for New Antimalarials
Authors: Beata Gryzlo and Katarzyna KuligMalaria continues to be a potentially fatal threat to almost half of the world's population. In the present review, efforts have been made to provide a literature concerning the study of quinoline as a privilege structure for search of new malarials. The review covers advances in that field made in few last years.

An Overview of Data Mining Algorithms in Drug Induced Toxicity Prediction
Authors: Ankur Omer, Poonam Singh, N.K. Yadav and R.K. SinghThe growth in chemical diversity has increased the need to adjudicate the toxicity of different chemical compounds raising the burden on the demand of animal testing. The toxicity evaluation requires time consuming and expensive undertaking, leading to the deprivation of the methods employed for screening chemicals pointing towards the need to develop more efficient toxicity assessment systems. Computational approaches have reduced the time as well as the cost for evaluating the toxicity and kinetic behavior of any chemical. The accessibility of a large amount of data and the intense need of turning this data into useful information have attracted the attention towards data mining. Machine Learning, one of the powerful data mining techniques has evolved as the most effective and potent tool for exploring new insights on combinatorial relationships among various experimental data generated. The article accounts on some sophisticated machine learning algorithms like Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), k-mean clustering and Self Organizing Maps (SOM) with some of the available tools used for classification, sorting and toxicological evaluation of data, clarifying, how data mining and machine learning interact cooperatively to facilitate knowledge discovery. Addressing the association of some commonly used expert systems, we briefly outline some real world applications to consider the crucial role of data set partitioning.

Bioactive Natural Compounds from the Mangrove Endophytic Fungi
Authors: Kui-Wu Wang, Shi-Wei Wang, Bin Wu and Ji-Guang WeiIn recent years, mangrove endophytic fungi are increasingly attracting attention of the pharmaceutical community as they produce a wide variety of metabolites that are structurally unique and pharmacologically active. Previous chemical investigation of mangrove fungi resulted in the discovery of various bioactive secondary metabolites including terpenes, chromones, coumarins, polyketides, alkaloids and peptides with diverse structural features. The present report reviews the papers, which have appeared in the literature till now, concerning the isolation, structural elucidation, and biological activities of the secondary metabolites from mangrove endophytic fungi.
