Methods for Dynamic Spectrum Access and Spectrum Management in Cognitive Radios
More LessAuthors: Gian Marco di Marzo and Francesco BenedettoRadio Communication is one of the research fields that is continuously improving and innovating. In particular, cognitive radio is one of the fastest developing arguments over the last few years, due to recently published standards that were lacking some years ago. The possibility of understanding the best frequency to be used is an important discovery in the world of communications. In this work, we will see how the cognitive technology works when has to access the spectrum. We will discuss and review some recent patents focusing on the following topics: how the system recognizes the best frequency, and how it changes the frequencies to log on the spectrum. At the end of the paper, we will discuss the importance of this new methodology along with future developments, keeping in view the pros and cons.

Patents on IPv6-Related Technologies
More LessAuthors: Michele Amoretti, Gianluigi Ferrari, Jean-Luc Richier and Andrzej DudaIPv6 is an Internet Layer protocol for packet-switched networks providing end-to-end datagram transmission across multiple domains. IPv6 was formally described for the first time in the Request for Comments (RFC) 2460, published in December 1998. In addition to offering a larger addressing space, IPv6 also defines some features not present in the previous version of the protocol (IPv4). For example, IPv6 simplifies the aspects of address assignment, network renumbering, and router announcements when changing network connectivity providers. Moreover, it simplifies packet processing in routers by placing the need for packet fragmentation at end points. IPv6-related patents cover issues or extensions not defined by RFCs. In this research article, we present and discuss the state of the art of such patents.

Patent Review on Network-based Elderly Healthcare System in the US
More LessAuthors: Chuan Jiang and Samuel H. HuangSpurred by the aging world, various network–based healthcare systems have been developed to provide and facilitate elderly healthcare service. This paper is intended to provide a review on the state of the art for network-based elderly healthcare systems in the US. Initial search resulted in 41 patents and after careful review 9 representative patents are included in the second round review. These 9 patents are categorized based on their characteristics and explicitly introduced in this paper. The current challenging issues are pointed out and the future development trend is identified in this research area.

DroLIGHT-2: Real Time Embedded and Data Management System for Synchronizing Circadian Clock to the Light-Dark Cycles
More LessAuthors: Zeeshan Ahmed and Charlotte Helfrich-FörsterSynchronizing the endogenous clock of animals to artificially created light-dark cycles in the laboratory is a challenging task, because it needs a fully controllable, automatic lighting system that produces various light-dark cycles with changing spectral composition of high quality and fidelity. Here, we focus on the development of such a system for the model species Drosophila melanogaster. Meeting the technological objectives of this research, we introduce a user friendly, real time embedded, distributed, data management and multi-threading based system i.e. DroLIGHT-2, which is capable of controlling and automating an LED-based lighting system. In this manuscript, we briefly explore what DroLIGHT-2 is, its features, advancements, hardware, usage and pitfalls. We validate the software application with two and three dimensional presentation of the obtained results generated by DroLIGHT-2 and compare them with existing, our previously published solutions. We also discuss followed software engineering’ paradigm, used development life cycle, some designed application’ models with implementation and graphical user interface’ details. Moreover the paper also discusses few patents relevant to circadian-rhythm and real time embedded systems.

Multilevel Thresholding Using Chaos Optimization and Differential Evolution Algorithm
More LessAuthors: Yuhuan Chen and Chenfu YiMultilevel thresholding usually is much computationally exhaustive in the process of searching the optimal thresholds. In order to improve computational efficiency, this paper presents an image segmentation method by using the chaos optimization algorithm (COA), which is incorporated into differential evolution (DE). The stochastic property and space ergodicity of chaos mapping are utilized to enlarge the search range and to explore a huge search space. Additionally, to find the optimal thresholds, the differential evolution with chaos optimization algorithm (DECOA) is considered by using the objective model based on the maximum entropy criterion. The presented segmentation method has been simulated on six standard test images and compared with the canonical DE and some other classic optimization algorithms. Experimental results show that the presented DECOA algorithm has much faster convergence speed than those of some existing methods. Furthermore, this algorithm can get superior segmentation performance of the feasibility and effectiveness.

Wavelet Packet Basis Optimal Selection in Compressing Vibration Signals of a Gearbox
More LessIn this paper, a compression algorithm of gearbox vibration signal combining wavelet packet transform is proposed. The effects of wavelet packet transform are also introduced and several main attributes of wavelet basis are analysed. Based on the description and discussion, a method to select wavelet basis of the compressing gearbox vibration signal is proposed. The paper represents a review of some recent patents regarding vibration signals. Experiment shows that, better SNRs of reconstruction signal can be obtained by using wavelet basis with low vanishing moment. Among those wavelet basis with low vanishing moment, the best signal-to-noise ratio in the same compression ratio can be obtained by using ‘coif’ wavelet basis because of its best symmetry.

Recent Patents on Real-time Deep Space Target Track System Based on Dual-DSP
More LessAuthors: Yonghui Xu, Jihui Zhang and Yi WeiTo solve the problem of the small target detection and recognition in outer space, a target detection and recognition system based on dual-DSP and FPGA was designed. FPGA was used for image preprocessing module and serial communication circuit. Compared with some recent patents on target detection and recognition problems, the patents did not design algorithm based on the hardware, as the efficiency was very low. Fixed-point DSP was used to realize a visible light target detection and recognition algorithm. Floating-point DSP was used as communication and control algorithm. Practical application approved that the system perfectly met the requirements of the target detection and recognition in deep space.
