Abstract

Evidence-based practice provides a five-step framework for providing high quality healthcare. This review takes the reader through the basics of the five steps (ask a question, acquire some information, appraise the evidence, apply the results and assess performance) in the setting of acute paediatric medicine. It shows how even frontline clinicians can provide diagnoses, treatments and prognostic information based on the best evidence, acknowledging patient and family needs and integrating clinical expertise.
