Mental Health Promotion in Schools: Volume 1
More LessBehavior problems are approaching epidemic levels in many schools and mental health issues in school-aged children is an international concern. Similarly, parents, caregivers, and other concerned adults report behavioral disturbances in homes and in other settings despite the ongoing effort to ease access to mental health services.
Student mental health has also been demonstrated to have a direct impact on student behavior and performance. This book discusses methods by which educators can promote student mental health, similar to the ways in which schools already promote physical health.
Promoting student mental health may mean doing things differently than are currently being done, but does not involve doing more than what is already is being done. Professional educators, counselors and readers interested in public mental health matters will greatly benefit from this book.

Fractal Antenna Design using Bio-inspired Computing Algorithms
More LessThis book presents research focused on the design of fractal antennas using bio-inspired computing techniques. The authors present designs for fractal antennas having desirable features like size reduction characteristics, enhanced gain, and improved bandwidths. The research is summarized in six chapters which highlight the important issues related to fractal antenna design and the mentioned computing techniques. Chapters demonstrate several applied concepts and techniques used in the process such as Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Genetic Algorithms (GAs), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO). The work aims to provide cost-effective and efficient solutions to the demand for compact antennas due to the increasing demand for reduced sizes of components in modern wireless communication devices.
A key feature of the book includes an extensive literature survey to understand the concept of fractal antennas, their features, and design approaches. Another key feature is the systematic approach to antenna design. The book explains how the IE3D software is used to simulate various fractal antennas, and how the results can be used to select a design. This is followed by ANN model development and testing for optimization, and an exploration of ANN ensemble models for the design of fractal antennas.
The bio-inspired computing techniques based on GA, PSO, and BFO are developed to find the optimal design of the proposed fractal antennas for the desired applications. The performance comparison of the given computing techniques is also explained to demonstrate how to select the best algorithm for a given bio-inspired design. Finally, the book explains how to evaluate antenna designs.
This book is a valuable resource for students (from UG to PG levels) and research scholars undertaking learning modules or projects on microstrip and patch antenna design in communications or electronics engineering courses.

Fractional Calculus: New Applications in Understanding Nonlinear Phenomena
Current Developments in Mathematical Sciences: Volume 3
More LessIn the last two decades, many new fractional operators have appeared, often defined using integrals with special functions in the kernel as well as their extended or multivariable forms. Modern operators in fractional calculus have different properties which are comparable to those of classical operators. These have been intensively studied for modelling and analysing real-world phenomena. There is now a growing body of research on new methods to understand natural occurrences and tackle different problems.
This book presents ten reviews of recent fractional operators split over three sections:
- Chaotic Systems and Control (covers the Caputo fractional derivative, and a chaotic fractional-order financial system)
- Heat Conduction (covers the Duhamel theorem for time-dependent source terms, and the Cattaneo-Hristov model for oscillatory heat transfer)
- Computational Methods and Their Illustrative Applications (covers mathematical analysis for understanding 5 real-word phenomena: HTLV-1 infection of CD4+ T-cells, traveling waves, rumor-spreading, biochemical reactions, and the computational fluid dynamics of a non-powered floating object navigating in an approach channel)
This volume is a resource for researchers in physics, biology, behavioral sciences, and mathematics who are interested in new applications of fractional calculus in the study of nonlinear phenomena.

From Knowledge Networks to Biological Models
Biological Models
More LessMost findings about molecular interactions and cellular regulatory events are published in peer-reviewed scientific literature in the form of scientific jargon. The computerized text-mining algorithms are used to convert free grammar of human language into a set of formalized relationships between biological concepts in order to use this wealth of information. The compendium of such interactions extracted from an entire set of biomedical literature is a called knowledge network. Knowledge networks are the first step in the process of digitizing molecular biological knowledge. The next step is building molecular models depicting principal molecular events that govern various biological processes. Data mining in knowledge networks is the essence of building new biological models. The purpose is to elucidate major pathways of information flow through a molecular physical interaction network that happens during a disease, a cell process or an experiment. Such models contain key proteins involved in the process and can be used for prioritizing disease targets, for understanding of drug action and prevention of drug-induced toxicities, for analysis of patient predispositions and design of personalized therapies, for design of diagnostic biomarkers and analysis of patient molecular data. This e-book contains detailed examples illustrating the path to the digital biology and computerized drug development for personalized medicine. It provides conceptual principals for building biological models and for applying the models to make predictions relevant for drug development and translational medicine.
The e-book will also be useful for researchers who use high-throughput technologies for molecular profiling of disease and drug action. It provides examples for analysis of gene expression microarrays to infer biological models, to find biomarkers for drug response and for applications of high-throughput molecular profiling technologies for personalized medicine. Scientists in academia, in pharmaceutical industry as well as graduate students will benefit from reading this book. The illustrations from the book can also be readily used in taught courses for molecular biology and pharmacology.

From Microbe to Man
Biological Responses in Microbes, Animals, and Humans upon Exposure to Artificial Static Magnetic Fields
More LessSome arrangements and structures of permanent magnets are hypothesized to exert measurable physiological and pathological effects on living tissues when exposed to the resultant electromagnetic field. From Microbe to Man: Biological responses to artificial static magnetic field-exposure explores the effects of such arrangements based on this hypothesis.
The book begins with an explanation of the mechanisms of artificial static magnetic fields (SMFs). This is followed by sequential sections presenting the effects of SMF exposure on living organisms backed by thorough experimental studies (on microbial, animal and human trials). In conclusion, the work reveals the positive nature of SMF treatment and shows that this is indeed a viable alternative to invasive treatment in the case of a number of both acute and chronic conditions, such as stomatological pain and osteoporosis.
From Microbe to Man: Biological responses to artificial static magnetic field-exposure is aimed chiefly at medical professionals and the research community studying alternatives to conventional pain medicine and physiotherapy. However, laypeople interested in non-invasive medical treatment options can also benefit from the easy-to-read layout of the contents of this volume.
