Micro-arc oxidation emerged as a result of interdisciplinary collaboration. It draws on the basic principles of anodic oxidation, utilizing high voltage to break through the metal surface oxide film, triggering micro-arc discharge and generating a ceramic oxide film in situ, thereby overcoming numerous challenges associated with traditional processes. The article provides an overview of the various properties of micro-arc oxidation equipment and coatings. The report highlights three key performance aspects: wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and other performance characteristics, as well as certain features of micro-arc oxidation equipment, and describes patents obtained in recent years. At the same time, future research directions are proposed based on the coexistence of different properties within the same materials in the membrane layer and the preparation methods.
