Preview this chapter:

Biochar is a charcoal that is used for soil amendment. It is made up of wood, bones, and other organic substances including dried manure which is produced by a process known as pyrolysis under a lower amount of oxygen. Biochar can be used to improve the fertility of the soil which results in increasing the crop yield. It has a honey-comb-like structure which will help in the increase of the water holding capacity, and nutrient retention as well as by stopping the soil particles from getting compacted with each other. Infertility in the soil occurs due to the addition of different types of pesticides, weedicides as well as a lot of chemical substances. Therefore, biochar can act as a promising solution for the infertility of the soil while indirectly increasing crop yield.
