In addition to central mechanisms, food intake is regulated by peripheral pathways, including gastric distension and the release of peripheral peptide signals that communicate with the hypothalamus to induce appetite and hunger or satiety and satiation. The present chapter summarizes the current knowledge related to peripheral peptides involved in the short- and long-term regulation of food intake.
