Rab GTPases and Membrane Trafficking
More LessYpt/Rab GTPases form the largest branch of the Ras-related small GTPase superfamily and regulate intracellular membrane trafficking in all eukaryotes. Since their discovery over two decades ago, a wealth of information has accumulated about the roles that Ypt/Rab proteins play in vesicular transport steps, including vesicle budding, movement, and fusion. In recent years, Ypt/Rab GTPases and membrane trafficking have been discovered to play an important role in other cellular processes, such as signal transduction, cell growth and differentiation. Additionally, Rab GTPases have been implicated in various human diseases, ranging from diabetes to cancer. This e-book provides a timely update on the rapidly developing field and discusses all functional aspects of Ypt/Rab GTPases. The 12 chapters cover well-characterized Ypts/Rabs involved in both exocytic and endocytic pathways as well as newly identified and uncharacterized Rab GTPases. A comprehensive picture about how each Ypt/Rab controls multiple vesicular trafficking steps via interactions with multiple effectors is conveyed to the reader’s mind.
This e-book is the first ever volume focused on the Ypt/Rab GTPases and should provide a useful resource for researchers, students and teachers interested in the field.

Radiation Processes in Crystal Solid Solutions
More LessRadiation Processes In Crystal Solid Solutions is a monograph explaining processes occurring in two classes of crystal solids (metal alloys and doped alkali halides) under irradiation by various types of radiation (alpha, beta, gamma, X-radiations, ions). While metal alloys may differ in high radiation stability, solid solutions based on alkali halides are very radiation-sensitive materials. Radiation defect production mechanisms, intrinsic and extrinsic radiation defects, a role of complexes an impurity-radiation defect which explain distinction in radiating stability of the specified classes of solid solutions are discussed in this e-book. To describe radiation induced phase transformations, two approaches are highlighted: kinetic and thermodynamic. This e-book also includes research on the effect of small radiation doses in a structurally solid phase state of a solution along with a semi-quantitative estimation of radiation effects with respect to temperature changes. This e-book should be a useful reference for advanced readers interested in the physics of radiation and solid state physics.

Recent Advances Towards Improved Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal Pollution
More LessHeavy metal pollution represents a global challenge to both public health and environmental sustainability. Any means to reduce heavy metal pollution in the environment is of considerable economic significance. The use of green plants to clean up heavy metal pollution is an environmentally friendly as well as a low-cost approach to the problem. This plant-based biotechnology is commonly known as 'phytoremediation'. Presently, there is limited application of this technology because useful plants with enhanced heavy metal resistance/tolerance are still needed to assist remediation of environments polluted with heavy metals. A key to improved phytoremediation of heavy metal pollution lies in research seeking for a better understanding of the mechanism(s) of heavy metal resistance/tolerance in plants. This E-book presents a unique treatment of the topics that have never been comprehensively brought together before in a single advanced reference. The volume explores aspects of plant biology that are critical for employing phytoremedation techniques to combat heavy metal contamination such as the specific plant biology, seed biology, plant tissue culture and enzymology. This E-book will be a useful reference to plant biologists, biotechnologists and environmental engineers seeking information about phytoremediation of heavy metals from the environment.

Recent Advances in Acute Type A Aortic Dissection
More LessType A acute aortic dissection (TAAAD) is an acute cardiovascular condition that is normally associated with genetic conditions such as Marfan Syndrome, but it can also occur in patients with no known predisposing risk factors. TAAD is associated with extremely high mortality (over 20% of documented cases in medical literature) if not addressed on time. Surgical management of TAAAD also varies tremendously depending on the causative pathology. Techniques to manage TAAAD cover the entire spectrum of methods employed in cardiac surgery ranging from a simple replacement of the ascending aorta to aortic root sparing or replacement, and an aortocoronary bypass to total arch and descending aortic stenting involving hypothermic circulatory arrest or other cerebral protection strategies. New medical evidence suggests that concomitant, intraoperative management of the arch and descending aorta minimizes the need for subsequent surgeries in patients who are operated upon for TAAAD. Coupled with new diagnostic technology available to medical professionals, better long-term patient outcomes for TAAD treatment are now a reality.
Recent Advances in Acute Type A Aortic Dissection presents a collection of comprehensive reviews from many experts on TAAAD. Cardiac surgeons can benefit from this volume by learning about current medical opinions and consensuses on risk factors (including genetic predisposition), diagnostic modalities, intraoperative management, surgical options, cerebral protection strategies, and long-term follow up procedures on acute TAAAD.

Recent Advances in Angiogenesis and Antiangiogenesis
More LessThe book presents recent advances in the field of angiogenesis and antiangiogenesis. Starting with the hypothesis of Judah Folkman that tumor growth is angiogenesis dependent, this area of research now has a solid scientific foundation. Tumor growth, metastasis, progression, dormancy and apoptosis depend on angiogenesis: several clinical studies have shown a positive correlation between the number of vessels in the tumor, metastasis formation and disease prognosis. A number of approaches have been developed to inhibit tumor angiogenesis, and numerous compounds discovered that inhibit angiogenesis, but only a few of them proved effective in vivo and only a couple of agents were able to induce tumor regression. These and other related developments described in the book should prove to be of interest to a large number of readers wishing to keep abreast with the latest developments in the field.

Recent Advances in Robust Speech Recognition Technology
More LessThis E-book is a collection of articles that describe advances in speech recognition technology. Robustness in speech recognition refers to the need to maintain high speech recognition accuracy even when the quality of the input speech is degraded, or when the acoustical, articulate, or phonetic characteristics of speech in the training and testing environments differ. Obstacles to robust recognition include acoustical degradations produced by additive noise, the effects of linear filtering, nonlinearities in transduction or transmission, as well as impulsive interfering sources, and diminished accuracy caused by changes in articulation produced by the presence of high-intensity noise sources. Although progress over the past decade has been impressive, there are significant obstacles to overcome before speech recognition systems can reach their full potential. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems must be robust to all levels, so that they can handle background or channel noise, the occurrence on unfamiliar words, new accents, new users, or unanticipated inputs. They must exhibit more 'intelligence' and integrate speech with other modalities, deriving the user's intent by combining speech with facial expressions, eye movements, gestures, and other input features, and communicating back to the user through multimedia responses. Therefore, as speech recognition technology is transferred from the laboratory to the marketplace, robustness in recognition becomes increasingly significant. This E-book should be useful to computer engineers interested in recent developments in speech recognition technology.
